Formatting and submitting poems A reader writes to ask: I have three questions about longer poetry manuscripts. In most cases, editors request poetry submissions that contain poems, yet nearly every example I can see depicts a submission of a single poem.   I was so happy that my granddaughter and 2nd grader, Ingrid's teacher did lots of poetry with her this year, and it seems that this 2nd grade loved writing poetry too.   I love writing it when I don't have to for school or something, because it is just really gratifying and a great way to reflect on how I feel about a book, a situation, a world problem or a song. I don't like reading it as much but I always find it interesting to see different creative and stylistic devices used interestingly. The other night, I took Elizabeth Bishop: The Complete Poems and a glass of red wine upstairs to the bathtub while my kids hung out in the family room with their dad. I call this combo my “mom medicine.” I started off with some of Bishop’s well-known pieces, like “Filling Station,” “The Armadillo,” and “One Art,” inhaling some of the beautiful, witty lines I hadn’t visited.
